Description:
Silver spoon with upturned wavy-end or dognose handle and an elliptical bowl with a ridge and beaded ratail, which is marked "WW" with three stars three times and a device, a mark attributed to William Webb, and engraved "SM / 1702" on the back of the handle. The Webb(e)s appear to have been important goldsmiths in the area, members of the family being recorded in both Winchester and Southampton. Jackson's (1989) lists both a William Webb Sr. and William Webb Jr. and the earliest mentions of 1683. This mark was originally recorded in Flynt and Fales as that of William Ward (1678-1768) of Wallingford, Connecticut. However, there are a number of examples of the work of the William Webbs with this mark sold primarily by English dealers. Also see HD 75.515.
