Description:
Corner basin stand with one drawer. The design is derived from plate 83 of Hepplewhite's "Guide", and was meant for installation in the corner of the room. Cleanliness required water, and by the end of the eighteenth century, specialized furniture was designed to accomodate its presence in the house. The stand is fitted with openings in the top to hold a basin and soap dishes. A pitcher of water could rest on the shelf below. The stand is very close in construction to a basin stand at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, part of a five piece set made by William Hook for his sister, Hannah, in 1808 or 1809.
