Description:
Set of four silver spoons with pointed oval bowls with shaped and outlined arched drops and pointed-end handles with bright-cut decoration, which are marked "MORSE" in a rectangle for Stephen Morse, and engraved with the initials "LM" in foliate script in a bright-cut medallion on the front of the handle. Stephen Morse (1743/44-1800) who worked as a silversmith in Gloucester, Massachusetts, 1767-1771; in Portsmouth, NH, 1771-1791; Concord, NH, 1791-1795; probably in Boston, MA, after 1796 where the directory of 1796 lists a Stephen Morse, goldsmith, on Hanover St; and in Deerfield, New Hampshire, by 1800.
Buhler and Hood attributed this mark to Moses Morse as found on a silver teaspoon (acc. #1930.3323) in the Yale University Art Gallery collection. Moses Morse worked as a silversmith in Boston from 1813-1830.
