Description:
Silver teaspoon with an upturned spatulate-end handle with a midrib and an eliptical bowl with rounded drop and obed shall on the back, which is marked "I. MOULTON" for Joseph Moulton II (1724-1795), and engraved with the initials "A / MM" in block letter on the back of the handle. Son of blacksmith Joseph Moulton (1694-1756), Joseph Moulton II was the younger brother of silversmith William Moulton (1720-c.1793), and was active in Newburyport for nearly 50 years. Stephen Decatur attributed three marks to Joseph Mounton II, two of which ("JM" in a rectangle, and "I. MOULTON" in a rectangle) and a third ("J M" with a cross between in a rectangle) Louse Belden suggests were shared by Joseph and his nephew, silversmith Joseph Mouton III (1744-1816).
