Framed Hollow cut head silhouette: profile of a woman with puffy sleeve blue dress and red/pink fischu and bead necklace, attributed to the Puffy Sleeve Artist, New England, c. 1830. Paper, watercolors, black backing. Original frame. Examples of the Puffy Sleeve Artist's work have been found in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts, leading some scholars to believe that he was an itinerant artist. Others think that they have positively identified the artist as Ezra Wood, who lived close to the Post Road in Buckland, MA - a location that would have provided him with a steady stream of customers, travellers, and commissioned business. Without a signed work, the identity of the Puffy Sleeve Artist remains inconclusive. Whoever he was, the Puffy Sleeve Artist appears to have created silhouettes from 1830 - 1831.
