Description:
Small thrown unglazed red earthenware vase, with flaring lip, narrow neck, and curved sides, flat base, decorated with painted decoration of small daisies, ferns, blue flowers, vines and leaves with a black rim. Similar unglazed vases are in the collection of the Merrimac [Essex County, MA] Town Hall. According to Lura Woodside Watkins, Early New England Potters and their Wares, "a form of household decorative pottery was made in Merrimacport in the 1870s and 1880s. She described it as a bric-a-brac product. While not a lot of information is known about this production, it was still likely under the direction of the Chase family. A reddish gold painted red earthenware bottle (vase) recently emerged in the greater Newburyport, Massachusetts - area, which is likely related to this business. It is very thinly potted with a top and foot that is very similar to characteristics William Pecker would have used on his jugs and some pots before 1820."
