Description:
"Jacob Forman," attributed to the Bedford Carver (w. 1778-1785), Bedford, New York. Jakob Forman's name appears on the rolls of a regiment from Westchester County, New York. Bedford, New York was burned by the British in 1779. The calligraphy is bold and carefully executed in large shaded block lettering. The inscription is contained in a rectangular cartouche that has a shark-finlike decoration along the top. A mounted soldier with sword in hand stands beside the cartouche. above two rows of marching soldiers. Soldiers armed with swords peer out from the rigging of an an elaborately rigged ship and on the starboard side are twenty gunports with cannon firing. A large flag, which appears to be the Grand Union flag is flying from the stern.
