Description:
Powder horn inscribed "Nathaniel Hosmer..." and attributed to the Hosmer carver (working 1775-1776), Mason, New Hampshire. Nathaniel Hosmer's first official listing occurred in 1777, when he signed up to assist at the evacuation of Ticonderoga. He is also listed as serving in the Rhode Island campaign of 1778. This unusually large, beautiful horn is similar to many Siege of Boston horns. Its calligraphy is neatly executed in large capital letters shaded by lines and the words are separated by a variety of geometric devices. Five creatures are engraved in an almost professional hand and all the wildlife is carefuly drawn and intricately feathered or filled in with fur.
