Description:
"Sergeant Abner Eley," of Lyme, Connecticut, attributed to James Greenfield, probably Peekskill, New York. Abner Ely was a sergeant in the 6th Connecticut Regiment from May 8 to December 19, 1775. The calligraphy is the deeply incised block capital letters on all Greenfield horns. The spelling is phonetic, and in one place he miscalculated the spacing of the letters. The imagery focuses on the Lorelei (mermaid) and the lion, whose expressions differ somewhat from those seen on Greenfield's own horn. There is a house that is identical to the one on the Murray horn (no.85) and a large fortification with firing cannon representing Roxbury Fort where Ely served in 1775. An uneven circle surrounds a group of motifs that include fish, trees, and two longboats with oars.
