Description:
Powder horn inscribed “Lieu:t Simeon Smith / his horn Charles Town / Camp No 3 Decr ye 12th AD 1775 / Grait Liberty inspire our Sons / And Magnify Our Zeal / Grait God of Worship protect Our Cause / And we.ll Submit Thy Will.” The height of horn carving during the Siege of Boston is demonstrated by the work of this unknown professional engraver. The lettering is of the highest quality of copperplate engraving, embellished with flourishes and a rococo border. Clearly literate, the engraver used his words to create a pleasing overall design. The two ships sailing with the fish between them is a wonderful counterpoint to the architecture depicted onshore. Simeon Smith marched from Ashford, Connecticut, toward the Lexington Alarm of April 1775.
