Description:
Powder horn inscribed "Asa Willcocks..." and attributed to the Simsbury carver, Roxbury, Massachusetts. Asa Willcocks had a long military career starting in April 1775 and ending in September 1781. This horn is identical stylistically to the Elijah Case horn (no. 79), with the same high quality incised geometric designs. The calligraphy is also the same but appears that the Willcocks carver was rushed to finish this horn, because the lettering is careless, almost sloppy. The formations of soldiers are the same, too, and appear in almost the same positions, but are not so skillfully carved. It also has the phrase LIBERTY AND PROPERTY engraved as a border encircling the plug end of the horn. Although their dimensions are different, the Willcocks and Case horns are treated the same at the spout end.
