Description:
Powder horn inscribed “RUFUS HILL / Lake George / September Ye 5 1755 / July 1755 Ye 3rd / Allbone [Albany] / Sept Ye 8th 1755 / Our Battle At The / Lake St George / Was Fought With 2300 / French. / RH” Inscribed on paper: “RUFUS HILL: / Lake George Call’d by / The French Saucreman / Sepr ye 7th A:D:” The chaotic composition of the carving on Rufus Hill’s horn captures the uncertainty of the French and Indian War. It also records Hill’s travels as a member of the First Connecticut Regiment in 1755. He marched from Albany in July, arrived at Fort Edward in August, and then fought at the Battle of Lake George in early September. The carved plug is elaborate, featuring a beautifully inscribed ink-on-paper legend, covered with a thinly shaved window of horn held in place by a carved wooden frame.
