Description:
"Nicholas Edgecomb Pickett," Marblehead, Massachusetts. Pickett served in the Massachusetts Regiment at Cambridge in 1775 and 1776. Of Pickett's 5 children, three were born before this horn was made: Mary, Nicholas and John. Undoubtedly these are the names and faces shown on the horn. Each is perfectly round. The two with borders are wearing crowns and are presumabley the two sons. The third, uncrowned, face representing Mary has long hair and is wearing beads. There is an impressive view showing a house, a church, and a fort, all probably derived from actual views of Marblehead and the harbor. Five different sailing vessels with accuratate rigging, some vines and a number of animals are also shown. This horn is delightful because of its varied motifs.
