Description:
This candlestand is attributed to Samuel Dunlap (1752-1830) of the Dunlap Workshops, in Salisbury, New Hampshire. The stand features an octagonal top with molded edges and tapered underside. It has octagonal blocking at the upper and lower ends of the pedestal. These features stylistically relate to similar pieces made by the Dunlap family of cabinetmakers. Of Scots-Irish descent, brothers John (1746-1792) and Samuel Dunlap and eight of their sons made furniture in towns throughout the Merrimack River Valley of Southern New Hampshire.
