Description:
White feldspathic stoneware octagonal teapot with a flower finial over a band of slip molded acanthus leaves over a shell lappet border on the slightly domed cover; the pot has a scalloped gallery over a shell lappet border on the shoulders; short S-shaped spout attached in center of body and tapering to the lip; and angular C-shaped handle attached at the shoulders and lower side. The center body has eight panels separated by columns with sprig-molded decorations: two boys in classical garb with the standing boy lighting the kneeling boy's torch; a young boy holding on to a lion; and foliate designs. In 1997, Diana Edwards attributed this teapot to Chetham and Woolley; according to her, the handle shape is distinctive to the factory as well as the molded patera shape on the side. The shell lappett border around the base is also found on shards at the Chetham & Woolley site. James Chetham (1754-1807) and his brother-in-law Richard Woolley were in partnership from at least 1793 to 1807 with Chetham's death, when his widow, Ann, succeeded him and contined business with Woolley until his departure in 1809. Ann contined the business, joined by her son, Jonathan Lowe Chetham, in 1814, trading as Chetham & Son from 1818 until her death in 1821. Jonathan Chetham continued with John Robinson as Chetham & Robinson from 1822 to 1834; with Robinson's son, Samuel, as Chetham & Robinson & Son from 1834 until John's death in 1840; and alone until his death in 1861.
