Label Text: My work deals with the past and how memories evolve as they pass from one generation to another, and the impact this has on the images they evoke. As we move further and further away from the past, we lose much of the detail while the importance we place or don't place on a memory, event or person, results in altered images that often become cleaner and simpler.
Michel Laplante and Céline Bérard are from a large series of wood panels. They are based on the name of one of my ancestors, starting with my parents and they are conceived as husband and wife pairs. The elements in each are drawn from personal memory, from family stories of that individual, or from speculation about that person. . . . Michel Laplante and Céline (also called Célina) Bérard were my paternal great-grandparents. They were French Canadians who were born and died in Québec. The couple had 13 children (one of them my grandfather, Jean Baptiste Laplante).
