Description: single panel from vertical ōban triptych or polyptych; fūkeiga; nishiki-e
Label Text: This print is signed at lower-left "Gyokuran Sadahide ga" ('drawn by Gyokuran Sadahide') within a white cartouche. The title and subject of the print — an episode from the legendary 16th century rivalry of Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen — are indicated by the text at upper-right. Owing to condition issues, the other identifying marks are difficult to make out but are visible at middle-right. The square cartouche is the mark of publisher Yamaguchiya Tobei, while the two circular seals are the nanushi seals of the official censors. The left nanushi can no longer be read but the right one represents the censor Hama Yahei. The practice of sealing with two nanushi began in 1846 and endured until 1852, and has been used as the basis to date this panel.
