These are two panels of a series of eight, each depicting a different samurai (all of them half-brothers) from the play "The Eight Dog Heroes of Satomi," a kabuki adaptation of Bakin Kyokutei's (1767–1848) epic novel, "Nansō Satomi Hakkenden," which was published in 106 volumes from 1814 to 1842. Both the kabuki play and the novel recount the stories of eight half-brothers who are all mystically descended from a dog. As such, each has the kanji for dog ('inu') in their surname. This version was staged in Osaka at the Chikugo theatre in September, 1863.
The left panel is signed "Hironobu" at lower-left in black. The yellow cartouche, also at lower-left, identifies the publisher as Kinokuniya Yasubei. Identical markings are present on the lower-right of the right panel.
The circular seals that accompany these markings indicate the number of the series. The left panel, which depicts Onoe Shōroku, is labeled "4," while the right panel, featuring Asano Asatarō, is marked "3." - BB, 2014
