This squat vase exhibits a stunning decorative technique that was first developed in the early 18th century (Kangxi Period, 1662–1722) when there was a great deal of experimentation with monochrome glazes of reds and greens made with copper oxide. The ornamentation is executed in a complicated two-part process where a glaze popularized in the Song Dynasty (960–1279) was applied creating a crackled surface that was then stained for contrast. The vessel was then refired with the addition of the vibrant translucent green glaze.
