Label Text:
The early prints in Koizumi’s series celebrate the reconstruction of the city after the Great Kanto - Earthquake. In the foreground is the new Mitsui Bank near Nihonbashi, which was designed in a Neo-Classical style by the New York firm of Trowbridge & Livingston and opened in 1929. Visible behind the bank is the Mitsukoshi Department Store. Badly damage in the disaster, it had reopened by 1927, but work on the structure was not completed until 1935.
