The Ginza, located in downtown Tokyo just to the east of Tokyo Station, was the main shopping district for Western-style consumer goods in the city. After it was rebuilt following the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923, it became the center of modern urban life. Fashionable young men and women, known as “Mobo” and “Moga,” frequently engaged in “ginbura,” strolling along the sidewalks of the Ginza, looking into shop windows, and showing off recent purchases they’ve made of the most up-to-date styles. These three women stride confidently along the sidewalk observed by both Kageyama’s camera and a group of men.
