ōban nishiki-e triptych; sensō-ga

Label Text:
The title of the series is printed vertically in the cartouche at upper-right of the right panel. The triptych is signed "Kiyochika" in black on lower-left of of the left panel. Beneath the artist's signature can be found his seal in a red cartouche, which reads "Kobayashi Kiyochika." Immediately to the right on the same panel is the double-fish-shaped lozenge seal of the publisher Fukuda Hatsujirō, which gives his address as "Nihonbashi ku Hasegawa chō 19 banchi," in Tokyo. This seal also establishes the date of the print's publication as February, 1904. The left panel also bears an English translation of the title, which reads "The great victory of the Japanese navy in Chemulpo Engagement."

This battle occurred off the coast of Incheon, Korea, on February 9, 1904. The battle was a decisive military victory for the Japanese, with the Russian navy suffering major casualties.
