As Japan became increasingly embroiled in war in China in the mid-1930s, increasing numbers of young men were conscripted to be sent to fight on the continent. Groups of soldiers taking leave of their hometowns were a frequent sight on the streets of Japan’s cities. Kageyama photographed these soldiers at Surugadai in central Tokyo just after they had pledged their loyalty to the empire by making a Hinomaru, the Japanese flag, with their own blood.
