This photograph was included in "One Hundred Views of Tokyo," Kageyama’s graduation project from Tokyo Industrial High School. A woman, dressed in an elegant striped kimono and holding a traditional umbrella, is skillfully juxtaposed with the dramatically cropped steel pylons of Mannen Bridge, which spans one of the canals in the Fukakawa district to the east of the Sumida River. Kageyama wrote of this image:
In the rain that gently falls along the edge of the great river, holding an elegant umbrella with a bull’s-eye design, and wearing lacquered geta, the partially visible young woman of the Low City whose destination is unknown leaves behind her the sound of mincing steps, “kara koro koro.”
Through both picture and text Kageyama conveys a world in transition between old and new—a modern industrial city in which traditional ways of life seem increasingly out of place.
