Photographing the brutality of the war clearly took its toll on Kageyama. He writes how on the fifteenth of August he listened to the emperor announce the surrender of Japan with his fellow cameramen from the third-floor offices of the Asahi Newspapers. Soon after he went out to photograph in the public space in front of the Imperial Palace. There were few people there, but he did come upon a group of women from the women’s auxiliary corps, their eyes glistening with tears.
