Label Text:
The carriage is elevated or lowered by turning the geared handle. A series of pulleys in combination with meshed gears wound on a tension rope give support to the carriage. The weight of the carriage and of what is being lifted supply tension to the rope. Rope tension keeps the gears from silpping thus maintaining the carriage position. This cranking variation of pulley is used in situations such as scaffolding where rope pulling may not be advantageous.- Dr. Roberto A. Guatelli
