Label Text: Leonardo was the first person to state an extensive theory of fixed and movable pulleys. The application of mechanical advantage to a system of grooved pulleys and supporting ropes allowed a heavy weight to be raised easily. With this system of six pulleys and six supporting ropes, one pound of force would be needed to maintain equilibrium for a six pound weight. Thus, to raise a heavy weight one foot, the rope has to be pulled six feet. The amount of lifting force is six times less that the lifted weight. This is Leonardo's principle of mechanical advantage. - Dr. Roberto A. Guatelli
