Label Text:
Robert Rafailovich Fal’k’s early works, such as this painting, reflect the post-Impressionist style current in Moscow among the Jack of Diamonds artists’ group, which he founded in 1910. Still life subjects and Fauvist color typify his pre-war paintings, which were shown in the Exhibition of Paintings and Sculpture by Jewish Artists (1918) in Moscow. After the Revolution, he had solo exhibitions at the State Tretyakov Gallery and designed for Jewish theaters in Moscow and Byelorussia. Although proscribed and prevented from exhibiting between 1947 and 1957, he influenced a subsequent generation of nonconformist artists.
