Description:
This rattle, either made for the tourist trade or for likely use during kachina ceremonies by a Snake Dancer, is made of a hollowed gourd that has been painted to resemble a Snake Dancer's head. Two pointed wooden "horns" are attached to the rattle. A painted black snake is portrayed horizontally across the rattle's turquoise face and horns. Carved eyes and painted teeth are also present. A feather headpiece is seen on the back of the head, accompanied by a small tuft of reddish feather. The handle of the rattle is made out of cottonwood root. AP2018
