Description:
vertical ōban triptych; nishiki-e

Label Text:
This triptych is signed at lower-left of the left panel "Kiyochika" and bears the artist's seal in red, which reads "Kobayashi Kiyochika." The publisher's seal, immediately to the left in a rectangular cartouche, gives the name of the publisher as "Takekawa Seikichi," the personal name of the publisher Sawamuraya Seikichi of the firm Seieidō; it also states the date of publication as March, 1904 (Meiji 37). This print is numbered "44" in kanji at lower-right of the right panel. The narrative inscription describes the battle, in which the larger Russian ship was surrounded and defeated by the smaller Japanese boat.
