Label Text:
A couple walks along the eastern bank of the Sumida River at dusk. The man wears traditional Japanese clothes paired with a bowler hat. The time is sunset, and lights from restaurants near the mouth of the Sanya Canal, which leads to the Yoshiwara district, reflect off the surface of the water. Kiyochika was fascinated with the effects of light, a feature unknown in traditional woodblock prints. Images such as this one came to be known as “light pictures.”
