This photograph was taken by alumnus artist and art collector Paul Ackerman, when he was just fifteen years old. Using a single lens reflex 3.5mm Tessar Rolleiflex, Ackerman captured candid moments of 1950s city life in the Bowery, Brooklyn, and greater New York City. Despite his early skills as a photographer, Ackerman pursued a career in Los Angeles as a Psychoanalyst, but continued to paint and collect American Art. For him, there is a clear relationship between these early photographs and his work as a psychoanalyst. He explains: “My interest in understanding and communicating with people and practicing the ‘art’ of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy is related to these early 'up close and personal' images of adults and children.”
