Label Text: This photograph was taken by alumnus artist and art collector Paul Ackerman, when he was just fifteen years old. Using a single lens reflex 3.5mm Tessar Rolleiflex, Ackerman captured candid moments of 1950s city life in the Bowery, Brooklyn, and greater New York City. Despite his early skills as a photographer, Ackerman pursued a career in Los Angeles as a Psychoanalyst, but continued to paint and collect American Art. For him, there is a clear relationship between these early photographs and his work as a psychoanalyst. He explains: “My interest in understanding and communicating with people and practicing the ‘art’ of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy is related to these early 'up close and personal' images of adults and children.” VM, 2014
