Description:
ID))): The central figure of this art piece is Jesus Christ in white, affixed to a brown cross with nails visible in his hands and feet. The capitalized letters “INRI” are carved on at the very top of the cross. Above him is an arch with a cherub on either side. To the upper left side and below Jesus are three winged angels draped in white, collecting his blood into golden cups. At the bottom left side of the cross, the Virgin Mary is portrayed in a blue robe with a headscarf and golden halo around her head. At the bottom right side of the cross, St. John, the Baptist, is portrayed in a red robe, seemingly holding onto a book. A skull and bones are scattered on a green background at the base of the cross. The window's outer frame is segmented by black lead into panels, the upper section containing a golden-yellow background with a floral pattern, and the bottom section featuring a clear glass banner outlined in golden for potential inscription. (Wasifa Orthy '26)

Inscription: on titulus: INRI (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum / Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews); on halos: Sant Maria (Saint Mary); Sant Johannes (Saint John)

Label Text:
This is one of the most exquisite stained-glass panels at the Mead. It follows the design of a print by Martin Schongauer (ca. 1435/50–1491), the most significant printmaker north of the Alps from the time before Albrecht Dürer. The crucified figure of Christ occupies the center of the image. Four angels collect his blood into golden chalices. The blue sky in the background is broken by a black patch dotted with golden stars. On either side of the cross are the Virgin Mary in a blue robe and John the Evangelist clothed in red, with a book in his hands. The skull and bones at the base of the cross refer both to the interpretation of Golgotha as “The Place of the Skull” in the Bible and to the belief that this was the burial site of the first human, Adam. In this context, the skull and bones symbolize Christ’s redemption of humanity from the original sin committed by Adam and Eve.
