Label Text:
The theme of courtship set in gardens and meadows has been a Persian literary and artistic convention since early medieval period; this 20th century illustration of the genre employs many familiar features - a temporary pavilion set up in a green valley with trees, flowering bushes, and a brook - a prince offering a cup to his consort - music playing - and the cast of attendants; although painted in a revival style closely modeled after 16th century Persian miniature paintings, the artist introduces some novel motifs such as the vignette of an older man (on the left) turning his head toward the lovers at the urging of a youth; the physical separation of this vignette, the concerted gazes, and the youth's gesture appear to be a device inviting the viewer to share in the vision of this idyllic scene.
