Description:
ca. early 20th century plaster cast of a marble original, attributed to Scopas, dating to the Classical Period, ca. 350 BCE. This cast is of slab 1015 from the Amazon frieze on the Mausoleum of Halicarnassos, located near modern Bodrum, Turkey. Three figures are pictured. On the far left, an Amazon mounted backwards on her rearing horse engages in battle with a combatant located to her left, off of this slab. In the center, a Greek turns his head, outfitted in a crested helmet, to the right and lunges to the left away from his attacker. His shield is raised against an Amazon striding toward him from the right, her right arm raised in preparation to strike. She wears a flowing chiton and chamlys. All three figures probably originally held weapons either made from metal and affixed to or painted onto the relief. The original relief after which this cast is made is located at the British Museum in London, England.
Provenience: Turkey, near modern Bodrum, Mausoleum of Halicarnassos (original)
