Description:
ca. late 19th or early 20th century plaster cast of a marble original dating to the Classical Period, ca. 447-432 BCE. This cast is of figures L and M from the east pediment of the Parthenon, located on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The group of sculptures from the east pediment compose a scene depicting the patron goddess of Athens, Athena, being born from the head of her father and the king of the gods, Zeus. This seated female figure is generally identified as Dione and the reclining female figure as her daughter, Aphrodite, although some suppose that the seated figure is Gaia, the personification of the earth, and the reclining figure Thalassa, the personification of the sea. The original marble sculpture after which this cast is made is located at the British Museum in London, England.
