Description:
ca. late 19th or early 20th century plaster cast of a marble original dating to the Classical Period, ca. 447-432 BCE. According to the organizational system implemented by W.B. Dinsmoor and A. Michaelis, this is a cast of block VIII from the east frieze of the Parthenon, located on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The Parthenon frieze depicts the Panathenaic procession held in honor of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. On this block, two female figures face to the left, one behind the other in file; the first figure carries an incense burner, known in Greek as a thymiaterion. The original marble relief after which this cast is made is located at the British Museum in London, England, while the heads of the figures are located at the Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece.
