Description:
This carved argillite flute or recorder depicts a carved European man in European military dress on the back of the flute, representing either a generalized "white" man, or the flute could have been commission by this exact man--whose likeness was then included on the musical instrument. Two carved birds face the man's feet, with their wings entwined around the front of the flute. Ivory hearts are located near the finger holes. With the exception of the birds, these motifs are commonly associated with European influence. AP2018
