Description:
Oil portrait of Reverand John Thornton Kirkland (1770-1840), President of Harvard from 1810-1828, based on a portrait by Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) done in 1816 in Boston, which is in a black-painted, molded frame. The Gilbert portrait was exhibited in the 1828 Exhibition of Stuart Portraits in Boston, and at the Boston Musuem of Fine Arts in May 1880; it was also engraved on wood by Kilburn for "Winsor's Memorial History of Boston" (Vol. 4, 1881, p. 297) and produced in lithograph for "New England Magazine (Vol. 5, 1891, p. 282) by "Pendleton's Lithogy Boston." There are several known copies of Gilbert's Kirkland portrait, including one owned by Harvard. HD's unmarked copy focuses on Kirkland's head and upper torso with skechy details in the background.
