Description:
Print of John Thurman (1732-1810) of New York in round, black, wooden frame, which is inscribed below the portrait: "St. Memin No. 27 Pine St. N.York." The engraving was done by Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin (1770-1852) in 1798 after a 1797 drawing by Thomas Bluget De Valdenuit, (1763-1846); there is another copy of the print and the original Valdenuit drawing in the National Portrait Gallery. The typed description attached to the back of the frame reads: "John Thurman, Born N.Y. 1732 at Water & Front St. Purchased 1000 acres on Lake George at $1.00 per. Called it Johnsburg. Raised hundreds of cattle which he supplied to the government in the Revolution. Personel friend of George Washington. 'He met a tragic death having been killed by a ...bull which had always been considered perfectly gentle.' in 1810."
