Description:
Oil portrait of a man wearing a short wig, white lace collar, and black waistcoat and coat with large gilded buttons, who was said to be Samuel White (1718-1801) of Haverhill, Massachusetts. It is signed "AETATIS 72 / PINXIT 1784." (for age 72 and painted 1784) the upper right corner, and inscribed on the back "NK [conjoined] pinxit / 1786" in black paint in the lower right. Samuel White was a justice of the peace, representative to the general court, merchant and farmer, lived in Haverhill where he acquired a large estate and married Sarah Brown. One of their sons, Samuel White (b.1759) was a a farmer who continued to live on the estate with his own family. However, in 1784, Samuel White would have been age 66, not 72 yrs., although this man appears to be in his 60s.
