Label Text: An early work, this portrait represents the artist’s eccentric father (1838-1912), a devoted sportsman and amateur painter, known for his obsession with horses, falcons, and other animals of the hunt. The horse was a favored theme of the young Toulouse-Lautrec, who received his first formal training from a painter specializing in animal and sporting subjects. Because of injuries to his legs, including a broken leg from a fall from a horse and a disease that stunted his growth, Toulouse-Lautrec was often bedridden in his childhood. He once received a book from his father inscribed as follows: “…This little book on falconry will teach you to enjoy the life of the great outdoors, and if one day, you should experience the bitterness of life, dogs and falcons, and above all, horses, will be your faithful companions and help you to forget a little.” (Carol Solomon-Kiefer, 2007)
