Description:
Oil on canvas portrait of Nancy Henderson Hubbard, by Erastus Salisbury Field. Painting of a young girl in a green dress with elaborate leg-o-mutton sleeves with bows, she also wears a white collar with lace or embroidered edging and a bow; there is a small brooch or pin at the neck (possibly a mourning pin of hair surrounded by black-colored stones); she has brown hair with two ringlets on each side; Unsigned. Provenance: According to information provided by the consignor, the portrait descended in the family of the sitter to Clara Adams Bosworth of Amherst, Massachusetts, and was purchased from her estate. Note: Nancy Henderson Hubbard was born in 1823, the daughter of Ashley (b. 1792) and Harriet (Henderson) Hubbard. They resided on Ashley's father's family farm in Plumtrees (Sunderland), near Amherst, Massachusetts, and interestingly, the farm where Erastus Salisbury Field spent a major portion of his life. Nancy started writing verses very early, which she signed "Viola"; one of those, "Valedictory Hymn, Sung at the close of the Select School, North Amherst, Nov. 21." (where she graduated) is in the data file. She married Ansel W. Kellogg of Oskosh, Wis. on Sept. 14, 1857, and is buried in the North Amherst cemetery. There is a letter from Nancy which may be addressed to Elizabeth Peck Hubbard, HD 89.130.1, and which descended in the Hubbard family.Condition: Retouch, stable craquelure. Retouch to highlight eyes, sausage curls, shadow under nose, and lower lips, an area just under collar line, her brooch, other scattered sparse specks of retouch. In 2012, a new frame was made for the painting. This frame resembles an extant Field portrait (not in Historic Deerfield's collection) whose frame is thought to be original.
