Description:
Oil portrait of an unknown gentleman of the Werden-Wilcocks family by John Mare (1739-1802/3). The Wilcocks were early settlers of Killington,Connecticut, and both Wilcocks and Werdens also lived in New York. Born in New York, John Mare worked in New York City, Albany and possibly Boston, signed his last known portrait in 1774 in New York when he did the protraits of John Covenhoven (in Shelburne Musuem) and Dr. Benjamon Youngs Prime, and dropped from sight in 1795. Edith Gaines suggests that he moved to Edenton, North Carolina, where he lived from 1778-1802/02. Only thirteen portraits by Mare are recorded - four signed and the rest attributed on stylistic grounds; eleven of those are bust length such as this example.
