Description:
Oil painting, "Lady as Diana", with a jeweled crescent, falcon, dead quail, and spear done in whites, reds, russets, and browns and signed on the front, "J.C. 1718", for J[ohn?] Cooper (c.1695-living 1754?). J. Cooper may have been the son of Edward Cooper, a London art dealer and print publisher who died before 1725, who was described as London's foremost print seller of that period; his portrait, after J. Vandevaart, was engraved by Peter Pelham (1697-1751). Edward Cooper had a son, John, whose name has been associated as a mezzotint engraver, painter and print publisher. Several versions of this portrait have been recorded. According to Henry Flynt, Sr. who bought the portraits in 1949, they had been owned in New Hampshire for over a century
