Label Text:
The subject of this portrait, Franklin Schenck, was one of Thomas Eakins’s most loyal students at the Art Students’ League of Philadelphia. Contrary to what the painting’s title might suggest, Schenck was a free-spirited artist and singer who served as caretaker of Eakins’s studio in the 1890s. The buckskin shirt that he wears was a souvenir from Eakins’s sojourn to the Badlands of the Dakota Territory. Schenck served as the model for several other portraits and “cowboy” images that Eakins painted.
