Label Text:
Excerpted label text from the Curatorial Fellowship exhibition "Color in Containment," March 22 – April 29, 2018:
Color has a reputation for being impossible to describe. Not only does color frequently challenge language, it actively defies it. With that said, it isn’t uncommon to encounter both color and text as central elements in a single work of art. Walasse Ting’s 1 Cent Life features poetry in relationship to vibrant color images. 1 Cent Life is a “book steeped in a free-wheeling anarchy — a riotous color scheme seems to be the only rule it follows.” But Ting’s jarring yet dreamy words thread throughout the book of images, bringing a harmony to the clash between the contradictory philosophies of Pop Art and European Abstraction contained within. The text of Ting’s anthology corrals the color. - Margaret Wilson (M.F.A. Studio Art 2019) and Alison Ritacco (M.A. Art History 2019)
