Label Text: Rauschenberg has said, “Art can encourage individual conscience,” and during U.S. military action in Vietnam, many of his projects marked his public objections to American policies. In June 1970, for example, Rauschenberg withdrew his work from the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in protest of the war. A few months later he participated in the exhibition Art for Peace that involved more than forty galleries in New York and the surrounding area. This resulted in a major art auction, the proceeds from which went to the antiwar coalition Vietnam Referendum ’70. The Peace Portfolio, which included works by twelve artists, was an extension of this project. Comprising mainly newspaper clippings, Rauschenberg’s collage Untitled stands as a powerful visual testament to the conflicts and tensions in the U.S. at the time.
