Label Text:
A reflection on the Vietnam War era, this sculpture includes caricatures of American political figures, such as the conservative Illinois senator Everett Dirksen, and President Richard Nixon, who took office in 1969. The title of this work refers to social programs that were cut due to the cost of the war. Bauermeister’s sculpture encapsulates such then-contemporary criticisms of U.S. politics, and asks us to remember the past and to question our social relationship to history. (2018)
