Description:
English Staffordshire plate decorated with a blue transfer print of the Willow pattern. The Willow pattern was very popular in early 19th-century America, and many potteries in Staffordshire made this pattern to keep up with the demand. Jiggered plate, earthenware body, slightly indented corners, transfer printed with an underglaze cobalt blue enamel design, often known as the Willow pattern, the plate has an intricately patterned border with diamond diapering, cloud, cash symbols, and other Chinese style motifs, the well is decorated with a Chinese style aquatic scene with a pagoda, running fence, a bridge with three people crossing, trees, boat, and two paired birds. No maker's marks on the reverse, stamped with a star design in the center, there is an old paper label on the back with the numbers "457/12".
